First study of passive sampling to monitor short-chain chlorinated paraffins in water: Comparing capabilities of Chemcatcher® and silicone rubber samplers

چکیده
Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) are high-volume chemicals raising concerns because of their classification as priority hazardous substances by the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) and recent inclusion in persistent organic pollutants' (POPs) list Stockholm convention. As this group cover up to 5000 isomers, measurement is still challenging. Hence SCCPs occurrence environment poorly documented comparison with other POPs, especially matrices where they present at ultratrace levels such waters. In two-past decades, passive sampling has been increasingly used it overcomes some major drawbacks associated conventional grab sampling. This study constitutes first work aiming examine sampling's applicability for monitoring complex analytes' mixtures Optimization calibration two proven samplers, namely silicone rubbers Chemcatcher®, were performed through batch laboratory pilot experiments. Despite thousands molecules mixture, resulting global kinetic uptakes fitted well theorical model, both samplers. Sampling rates 8.0 L d−1 0.53 Chemcatcher® found, logKsw determined equaled 4.24 4.95. These values complete agreement published data HOCs. A field trial carried out marine coastal environments provided further evidence demonstrate samplers measure CPs amounts water bodies. All these results unveil that using or can be a relevant approach track traces water.

Effects of short-chain chlorinated paraffins on soil organisms.
Despite the fact that chlorinated paraffins have been produced in relatively large amounts, and high concentrations have been found in sewage sludge applied to soils, there is little information on their concentrations in soils and the effect on soil organisms. The aim of this study was to investigate the toxicity of chlorinated paraffins in soils. The effects of short-chain chlorinated paraffi...
متن کاملShort-chain Chlorinated Paraffins in Biota – Levels and Effects
Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) are highly complex technical mixtures of polychlorinated n-alkanes with carbon-chain lengths from C10-C13 and chlorine content between 49 and 70%. They are produced by chlorination of n-alkanes and do not occur naturally. Because of their physical properties (viscosity, flame resistance) they are used in many different applications, such as lubricant ad...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Chemcatcher and DGT passive samplers for monitoring metals with highly fluctuating water concentrations.
Passive sampling devices accumulate chemicals continuously from water and can provide time weighted average (TWA) concentrations of pollutants over the exposure period. Hence, they offer a number of advantages over other conventional monitoring techniques such as spot or grab sampling. The diffusive gradient in thin film (DGT) and the Chemcatcher passive samplers can be used to provide TWA conc...
